When Bio-One has done previous jobs for clients who hoard, there has never been one exactly the same. Every scenario is unique to the client. Some clients may hoard a variety of objects, and some may focus on particular items. Most of the time though, the objects consist of newspapers, magazines, books, plastic bags, or household supplies. Some people also hoard animals. “In the USA, 3500 animal hoarders are reported to the authorities every year.” Most of these animals have diseases or are found dead on the property.

No matter what the person is hoarding, it can cause the house to become an obstacle course full of dangers. When items are piled to the ceiling, you run the risk of them avalanching down, there will be trip hazards, fire hazards, and infestations can follow as well. The hoard can cause structural damage to the home, and in the case of an emergency, the first responders may not be able to get to resident.

Historically, hoarding was always thought to be an underlying mental health issue. “It has been associated with a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, and schizophrenia. A third of people with autism spectrum disorder are thought to hoard particular items.” In 2018, the World Health Organization added hoarding to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), in hopes to promote research and take this disorder more seriously. It is their hope that this will lead to a more sympathetic representation of hoarding in the media and more respect for the people who live with this disorder.

How can we tell if a person is showing signs of a mental illness, or are they just showing normal behaviors to situation? Each illness comes with its own symptoms, but common patterns of behavior may include the following:

· Excessive worrying or fear

· Feeling excessively sad or low

· Confused thinking or problems concentrating and learning

· Extreme mood changes, including uncontrollable “highs” or feelings of euphoria

· Prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger

· Avoidingfriends and social activities

· Difficulties understanding or relating to other people

· Changes in sleeping habits or feeling tired and low energy

· Changes in eating habits such as increased hunger or lack of appetite

· Changes in sex drive

· Difficulty perceiving reality (delusions or hallucinations, in which a person experiences and senses things that don't exist in objective reality)

· Inability to perceive changes in one’s own feelings, behavior or personality (“lack of insight”)

· Abuse of substances like alcohol or drugs

· Multiple physical ailments without obvious causes (such as headaches, stomach aches, vague and ongoing “aches and pains”)

· Thinking about suicide

· Inability to carry out daily activities or handle daily problems and stress

· An intensefear of weight gain or concern with appearance

Children can also developmental health conditions, because they are still learning how identify emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Children’s symptoms may include:

· Changes in school performance

· Excessive worry or anxiety, for instance fighting to avoid bed or school

· Hyperactive behavior

· Frequent nightmares

· Frequent disobedience or aggression

· Frequent temper tantrums

Knowing the warning signs of mental illnesses can help you decide if you should move forward to seek help and treatment. At Bio-One, we feel it is especially needed for people to be able to

Over the past couple weeks, Bio-One Henderson has been busy providing a variety of services, and health has been the concern on some of our client's minds. Bio-One uses proprietary chemicals designed to kill bacteria and blood borne pathogens. These chemicals are very versatile and have so many purposes. Crime scene remediation is not the only service we provide- we too are versatile and can serve so many purposes.

Cat urine remediation sounds almost impossible to anyone who knows the damage cat urine can bring. Using our chemicals, not only can we get rid of the smell of cat urine, but remediate the affected area(s) and bring the home to a safe condition all while smelling fresh. We had a cat urine remediation job recently as part of a gross filth cleaning which took our team almost a week to complete. Our clients were extremely happy with the result. We can help you more than you know. Just recently, Bio-One Henderson, has helped eliminate tobacco smoke odor from a rental home being put up for sale. Renters do not always treat the home they reside in as if it were their own- this is no secret. Over the last several months, following the suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, we have all been bombarded with suicide warning signs and prevention messages on television, radio, and especially social media. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media outlet, lately we can't seem to scroll for more than a few seconds without seeing someone posting or sharing a message about suicide.

That's wonderful. It truly is. Suicide is a tragic event that shatters countless lives and it needs our attention. At Bio-One we see it first hand on a much too regular basis. But why must it take the suicide of a celebrity to raise these levels of awareness? The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) lists the following statistics on their website (https://afsp.org/about-suicide/suicide-statistics/):

· Suicide is the 10^thleading cause of death in the United States

· Each year 44,965 Americans die by suicide

· If you're counting, that's 123 per day

· For every suicide, 25 others attempt suicide

These are shocking numbers and they should not be forgotten about until the next celebrity commits suicide, or the suicide of a loved one affects your family. When people find out I own a Bio-One and that I specialize in crime and trauma scene cleaning, one question I get asked often is, “How do you find employees that want to do this?” The truth is, they usually come to me. As surprising as it sounds, many people are fascinated by this industry and want to be a part of it. I get phone calls and e-mails on a regular basis from people asking if I am hiring. That doesn't always mean that they're cut out for it, and obviously I am not hiring all the time, but I appreciate the interest and always forward them an application to fill out and return so I can look it over once I do open up another hiring process.

There are no specific qualifications that will necessarily give you an edge when applying for this job, and no experience is necessary. Experience is helpful but that's understandably hard to come by. Once I think you'd be a good fit for the team, I would provide you with all the training you needed to be able to do the job safely and effectively.

The traits I look for when hiring a crime scene technician are (in no particular order):

1. Personality – I will not hire someone with a bad attitude or that would be incapable of communicating with a client in a professional manner. Not only will we have to work side by side for extended periods of time, but often times the clients are on the scenes with us, and I will not allow someone with a bad attitude ruin the reputation of my company.

2. Work Ethic – You must be dependable, punctual, motivated, and have an extraordinary attention to detail. When it comes to the crime scene clean-up business, Bio-One is the best. I am very proud of the work we do, and I insist on the best for our clients.

3. Physical Fitness – It may not seem like it, but the work can be very physically demanding. Recently we cleaned up a suicide in a garage. It was very hot. Even though we weren't doing anything necessarily physically demanding, when I took my bio-hazard suit off it looked like I had jumped in a swimming pool with my clothes on. We also complete many hoarding jobs, so we can be wearing bio-hazard suits for hours at a time while lifting refrigerators, couches, etc. If you are not in decent shape, you won't be able to do it.

4. Strong Stomach – This should be an obvious one. We work in blood, vomit, feces, urine, and any other body fluid you can think of. We come across spiders, roaches, mice, maggots, and other numerous insects and animals, both alive and skeletalized. It all smells as good as you can imagine. Typically, you either know if you could handle it or not. If you are applying for a job in this industry and you think you can handle it, I would have to think long and hard about hiring you.

5. Schedule – We are on call 24 ours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. My phone rings regularly in the middle of the night. Sometimes the job can wait until the morning, sometimes it can't. It's whatever the client needs. I understand things happen and all of my employees aren't available 100% of the time, but if you aren't available most of the time, I can't use you.

6. Pay – Again, this is an on-call business. The work is extremely streaky. Some weeks you will make lots of money, some weeks you will make zero. It's the nature of the business and you have to be prepared for that.

I should clarify that at the time that I am writing this blog, Bio-One Henderson is not currently looking to hire anyone. I am writing this in the hopes that I answer some questions for the curious.
